Presenter: Eli R. Lebowitz, PhD

Professor Lebowitz studies and treats childhood and adolescent anxiety at Yale Child Study Center.  His research focuses on the development, neurobiology, and treatment of anxiety and related disorders, with special emphasis on family dynamics and the role of parents in these problems.  Dr. Lebowitz is the lead investigator on multiple funded research projects, and is the author of research papers, books and chapters on childhood and adolescent anxiety.  His is also the father of three great boys.

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health problems in children and adolescents.  Parenting an anxious child means facing constant challenges and questions: When should parents help children avoid anxiety-provoking situations, and when should they encourage them to face their fears?  How can parents foster independence while still supporting their children? How can parents reduce the hold their child’s anxiety has taken over the entire family?

Breaking Free of Child Anxiety and OCD: A Scientifically Proven Program for Parents by Eli R. Lebowitz, PhD is the first and only book to provide a completely parent-based treatment program for child and adolescent anxiety.  Parents will learn how to alleviate their children’s anxiety by changing the way they themselves respond to their children’s behavior.  Instead, parents are shown how to replace their own accommodating behaviors (which allow anxiety to flourish) with supportive responses that demonstrate both acceptance of children’s difficulties and confidence in their ability to cope.  From understanding child anxiety and OCD, to learning how to talk with an anxious child, to avoiding common traps and pitfalls (such as being overly protective or demanding) to identify the ways in which parents have been enabling a child’s anxious behaviors, this book is full of detailed guidance and practical suggestions.

Wilton Youth Council will host a Zoom webinar with Dr. Lebowitz to discuss his groundbreaking book and ways parents and caregivers can help alleviate their children’s anxiety by changing the way they themselves respond to their children’s symptoms. Two subsequent book clubs led by Kim Zemo, LCSW and Vanessa Elias, Certified Parent Coach, will be offered in April.  It is not required to read the book beforehand to participate.

The Webinar is open to the public.  Book Club participation is limited to Wilton residents.

These events are being offered in partnership with Sped*Net Wilton, SEPTA, and Wilton Public Schools.
